The Legend of St.George
St.George was a military officer in the Roman army and the guard of Emperor Diocletion. However Diocletion himself ordered the death of St.George due to his unwillingness to renounce his Christian faith. Believed to have born between A.D. 275 - 281, St.George became a martyr in the year A.D. 303.
Church History
The early Christians in the area were dependent on the church founded by St.Thomas at Parur for their spiritual needs. The Church at Edappally was first built in the year A.D. 593 on a plot of land allotted by the Elangalloor Swaroopam. Those days the Arabian Sea stretched as far as Edappally and the church was facing the waters of the Sea.
By A.D.1080 the church was rebuilt to accommodate more people as the old church was too small in size by then. The altar was renovated with the picture of Virgin Mary. The facade was renovated 30 years back, but is now again changed to the earlier form with the help of the photographs of the old facade. The stone laying of the present church was done on the millennium day, the stone for which was blessed by His Holiness John Paul II.
The Well
The well adjacent to the old church is believed to have miraculous healing power. The water level in the well remains at 2 metres all through the year. The faithful drink water from this well, wash their face and head and take this water in a bottle to their homes.
