About Koodiyattam
Koodiyattam means acting in combination. Koodiyattam originated from Koothu which is a form of worship as a dramatised dance. The importance of Koodiyattam is in the acting. It uses all the four styles of acting as prescribed in the Bharathan's 'Natyasathram'. It has a history of over 1000 years and is recognised by UNESCO as a heritage art form.
Ancient Sanskrit dramas are used for Koodiyattam. This temple art form is traditionally practised by the Chakyar and Nambiar communities and is performed in a specially designed stage called the Koothambalam. Mizhavu which is a large copper pot, with its mouth tightly covered with calfskin leather is the main percussion instrument used for Koodiyattam.
