The Puri Rath Yatra is celebrated on the Shukla Dwitiya or the second day of the Ashadha month. This usually falls in June/July. The pulling of the Rath starts at 3.30 pm.
Description:The preparations for the Puri Ratha Yathra start on the Akshaya Tritiya day on which the Vishwakarma (carpenters) start the making of the chariots.
The rituals are as follows.
Snana Yatra festival is observed on the full-moon day of the month of Jyestha (May-June). This is the bathing festival of the deities.
The deities are bathed in the water on what is known as the Snana Yatra. The fifteen days period following it is known as the Anabasara, the deities are believed to be ill.
After this, the idols are available for Darshan from the day before the Rath Yatra. This is known as Netrotsava.
This is followed by Rath Yatra on the following day from the Jagannath temple to the Sri Gundicha temple which is about 3 km away.
