Schedule and Timing:

The Wayanad Community Seed Festival is held in the months of January/February. The 2019 tentative dates are 22nd to 24th of February.

Description:

Wayanad Community Seed Fest or Vithulsavam at Puthoorvayal is a platform for the exchange of seeds of indigenous crops and for ensuring the continuity of the variety of crops. The three day seed exchange festival is a major step towards ensuring the biodiversity of Wayand and the neighbouring areas.

The main events at the Wayanad seed festival are

Agro Biodiversity Exhibition - Rare plants and crop varieties are exhibited.

Seed fest - The community seedfest is the highlight of the event. Traditional farmers from the districts of Wayanad, Kasaragod and Kannur districts and nearby districts from Tamil Nadu actively participate in the seed exchange program.

More than a hundred farmers exhibit their collection of seeds in stalls which are called the Vithupura. Many hundreds of farmers visit the stall to procure the seeds. The collections of seeds include that of rice varieties, vegetables, legumes, tubers, millet etc.

Seminars - Educational programs and workshops will be conducted for the farmers. Biodiversity, impact of climate change and protecting indigenous crops and farming techniques are the main focus.

Felicitation - The occasion will also felicitate the Model farmers from all the panchayats of Wayanad as well as the traditional farmers selected from Biodiversity Management Committees (BMC) of other districts. The best stalls are also awarded.

Food festival - Savour the local as well popular Kerala dishes. Food stalls run by the Kudumbasree Mission.

The seed fest is organised by the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation, Wayanad District Tribal Development Action Council and Seed Care withe support of Kerala State Biodiversity Board, Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment and Kerala Kudumbasree Mission.

The venue at Puthoorvayal is around 6 KM from Kalpetta town and 4 km from Kalpetta New Bus Stand.

Cultural Programs - Enjoy folk art and various tribal art forms at the venue.
