Sunday - 5:30am , 7:00am, 9:00am, 11:00am, 5:00pm
Monday to Wednesday, Friday and Saturday - 5:30am, 7:00am, 5:30pm
Thursdays - Holy Mass at 5.30 am, 7 am, 10.30 am, and 4.30 pm. Novena to St. Sebastian along with all Holy Mass except the 7 am mass. Eucharistic Adoration along with 10.30 am and 4.30 pm Holy Mass. Confession can be done from 9.30 am.
Description:Arthunkal St Andrews Basilica also called the Arthunkal Palli is famous for its veneration to St Sebastian and the annual feast in January. Athunkal church is a forane under the Alappuzha Diocese and follows the Latin rite of the Catholic Church. It is also one among the 23 minor basilicas of the Catholic Church in India.
History of Arthunkal Church, Chronology of events.
1581, November 30th - The first church at Arthunkal, made of wood and coconut leaves was constructed. It was named after St Andrews.
1584 - Fr Jacomo Fenicio S.J. A Jesuit priest was made the vicar and he started construction of a new church made of lime and stone. The construction took 7 years. After this, he was transferred to Calicut.
1619 - Fr Jacomo was reappointed to Arthunkal and started reconstructing the church in 1620. He was very much popular and was known to lead a saintly life. He was lovingly called 'Veluthachan' or the white father. However, this name later became another name for St Sebastian.
1640 - The church was reconstructed facing west. During this period a Statue of St Sebastian was brought from Milan.
1829 - The Church now in charge of Carmelites; Chavara Kuriakose Elias was ordained who later became a saint in the Catholic Church.
1967 - The present structure of the Arthunkal church was consecrated by the then Bishop of Alappuzha, Michael Arattukulam.
1981 - The 400th year of the Church at Arthunkal was celebrated.
2009 - A Grotto of St Sebastian and a Flagpole was constructed.
2010 - The church was elevated to the status of a Basilica.
2014 - A Holy Adoration centre was opened.
2017, 8th January - The newly constructed Madbaha inside the existing church was consecrated. On the following day, a new flagpole was erected.
2018 - A rosary park was constructed within the basilica premises.
