Schedule and Timing:

The ten days Attukal Pongala festival begins on the Bharani Nakshatra of the Malayalam month of Kumbham. The main ritual which is the lighting of the Pongala hearths is on the 9th day.

  • 1st Day 05.45 pm - Kappuketti Kudiyirithu
  • 3rd Day 08.45 am - Beginning of the penance for the boys who participate in the Kuthiyottam offering.
  • 9th Day 10.15 am - Lighting the Pongala Hearths.
  • 9th Day 2.30 pm - Sanctification of Pongala
  • 9th Day 7.45 pm - Kuthiyottam Chooralkuthu Ceremony
  • 9th Day 11.15 pm - Procession of Goddess Attukal Amma.
  • 10th Day Akkathezhunallippu (Re-entering of the Goddess to the Temple)
  • 10th Day 12.30 am - Kuruthi Tharppanam (Sacrificial Offering)
  • 10th Day 9.00 pm - Kappu Azhich Kudiyilakkal
Description:

Attukal Pongala is celebrated at the Attukal Bhagavathy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram which has entered in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the largest single gathering of women for a religious activity.

Pongala means to boil over is a ritualistic offering of a sweet dish consisting of rice, sweet brown molasses, coconut gratings, nuts and raisins.

Devotees offer Pongala to appease the presiding deity, the Bhagavathy. Only women are allowed to participate in the Pongala ritual.
