The Cochin carnival celebrated in Fort Kochi carries the legacy of the Portuguese Christmas and New year celebrations. Kochi will adorn itself a festive charm during the season. Sports and cultural events are an inevitable part of the Cochin carnival.
Thousands of people gather on the new years eve at For Kochi to welcome the New Year. The 'Papanji', a giant effigy of an old man that symbolises the past year and all its ills are burnt to start a new year. The Papanji is burnt exactly at midnight.
A grand cultural procession takes place on the new years day which is the final day of the carnival. Almost all major folk art forms are represented in the carnival rally.
During the Carnival season, Tourists flock into the Fort Kochi area which is an amalgam of Dutch, Portuguese, British, Jewish, Arab and Anglo-Indian cultures intervened with the local customs.
