Description:

Moonnu Nombu is the main feast of Kuravilangad church. This feast is remembered for the repentance of the prophet Jonah. Also known as the 'Nineveer's Prayer', this fast spread from the 6th century through the Eastern Syrian Church.

The Letter by Archbishop Francis Rose in 1612 testifies that the Marthoma Nasranis traditionally celebrated this lent. The purification feast of the Holy Virgin Mary on 2nd February is also celebrated with the Moonu Nombu feast. Fasting and celebration come together here.

In the past, there was this practice of living in cottages that were kept around the shrine during these three days. Even today, many people belonging to different religions and also people who are staying far away come to stay here during these three days.

Kappal Pradakshinam

The Sail of Prophet Jonah disobeying the God, the hurricane that threw Jonah into the sea and later the calming down of the seas, are all depicted in the Kappal Pradakshinam.

Traditionally, the residents of Kadappur takes the ship for the procession. Centuries before, the ship travelled by the Kadappur residents was wrecked. The sailors prayed by calling Kuravilangad Muthiyamma, the Mother Mary. They offered to give a model of the ship to the Kuravilangad church.

The sea became calm. They safely reached the shores and built a model of the ship and handed it to the Kuravilangad Church. Later the Kappal Pradakshinam became an important event in the Moonu Nombu festival.
