The Machad (Machattu) Mamangam begins on the first Friday in the Malayalam month of Kumbham. The Kuthira Vela is on the following Tuesday which is the main day of the festival. This usually falls in the month of February.
Description:Machad Mamangam or the Machad Kuthira Vela is a five day festival of pageantry and splendour at Machattu Thiruvanikkavu temple which is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy. It is near to Wadakkanchery in Thrissur District.
The main procession of the festival is on the concluding day on which decorated effigies of horses called Kuthirakolams are brought to the temple by the devotees. These vibrantly adorned effigies are welcomes by the people with cheers.
Caparisoned elephants and Chendamelam add to the extravaganza. There will be many cultural entertainment programs as well.
The festival is a reflection of the spirit and joyfulness and fraternity of the region.
