Nehru Trophy Boat Race History
The Nehru Trophy Boat Race or Vallam Kali as it is called in Malayalam had a rather unplanned beginning. In 1952, as a part of the visit of the first Prime Minister of India Sri. Jawahar Lal Nehru, a boat ride was arranged for him from Kottayam to Alappuzha, accompanied by huge snake-boats, which turned in to boat race of sorts in the end. Nehru's unbound excitement over this event was the reason behind having a boat race in the Punnamada lake in the coming years. On returning to Delhi, Nehru donated a silver trophy for the winners of the race. In 1969, the boat race was formally renamed to Nehru Trophy Boat Race.
