The Puthari Thiruvappana or the first Thiruvappana is on Vrischikam 16th, which falls in December. The festival lasts two days.
The last Thiruvappana of the calendar year is on 30th of Kanni.
Thiruvappana and Vellattam are between 5.45 am and 8 am in the morning and Vellattam in the evening at 6.30 pm. on all days. The exception to these are from Thulam 1st to Vrischikam 15th during which the ritual is not performed. This period is Mid October and November.
The temple may be visited at other times of the day as well and offerings made.
Thiruvappana Mahotsavam is the major annual festival which is held on the 19th to 21st of Kumbham which falls in February.
Description:The Parassinikadavu Muthappan, a folk deity believed to be Lord Shiva in the form of Kiratha or the hunter is the presiding deity at the Sree Muthappan Temple also called the Parassini Madappura.
The important ritual being the Muthappan Theyyam which is a ritualistic dance performed twice a day, morning and in the evening. The Theyyam at this time is believed to be possessed by the deity and gives blessings and answers to the devotees.
Two versions of Theyyam enactments are performed. A minimalist version is called the Vellattam and an elaborate version is called the Thiruvappana. The Thiruvappana is said to be a personification of Lord Vishnu and the Vellattam that of Lord Shiva.
The Puthari Thiruvappana is the first Thiruvappana in a calendar year. This is a two day festival which is also a local harvest festival. The devotees and farmers around the place offer their fresh crops or the Puthari to the Muthappan.
Rituals at the Parassinikkadavu Sree Muthappan Temple
From the Puthari Thiruvappana, the daily Theyyam ritual carries on for almost a year with Kanni 30th being the last in that year. The ritualistic Theyyam dance is performed on all these days.
Toddy or the country liquor and dried fish may be given as offerings to the Muthappan after the Theyyam ritual is performed. The Parassini Madappura with its three-storied structure painted in white does not look a typical South Indian temple nor does it follow Brahmanical rituals as in most other temples.
The Thiruvappana Mahotsavam, the major festival is held in the Malayalam month of Kumbham (February).

Travel and Accommodation near Parassinikkadavu temple
Parassinikkadavu Sri Muthappan Madappura is about 10 km from Taliparamba and 16 km north of Kannur on the banks of Valapattanam river.
A few lodges are available around the place. Visitors may also ask for the limited but free accommodation available at the Madappura premises itself. Free food is also provided twice a day at the noon and in the evening.
