Schedule and Timing:

The festival period is 28 days from the Swathi asterisk in the month of Edavam to the succeeding Chithira asterisk.  The Kottiyur Elaneer Vayppu in 2019 is on the 25th of May.

Description:

Bavalipuzha a tributary of Valapattanam River divides Kottiyur as Akkare Kottiyur and Ikkare Kottiyur.

The Ikkare Kottiyur has a permanent temple while Akkare Kottiyur temple is an ad-hoc temple made only for the Utsavam. During the Vaysakha Mahotsavam, no poojas will be performed in the Ikkare Kottiyur temple.

Legend

Dakshan is believed to have conducted the Yagam at Kottiyur. When Lord Siva was insulted there, Sati his daughter and Siva's wife jumped into the Yagagni. The furious Lord Siva was later pacified.

Festival rituals and procedures

The Utsavam start with the Neyyattam on the Swathi asterisk of Edavam. That day evening, The sword will arrive from the Wayanad Murirerikavu.

After Neyyattam, follows 'eleneerattam'. Thousands of tender coconuts are presented in front of the Sivalingam. The tender coconut water is then poured on to the Sivalingam in order to calm down the furious Lord Siva.

 Rogini Aradhana is another ritual where the 'pushparchana' or the showering of flowers is done on the idol which is then embraced by the rightful.
