The Sargalaya Crafts Festival at Iringal, Kozhikode is held in December/January.
Description:Sargalaya International Handicrafts expo is one of the largest handicraft expos in the country organised by the Department of Tourism, Government of Kerala. Handicraft products from all states of India are available at Sargalaya.
Sargalaya is the first handicrafts village in Kerala.
The highlight of the mela is the works by local traditional craftsmen displayed in a separate pavilion. Thazhava Village that produces Pineapple leaf mattresses, Peruvamba village that manufactures Mridungam, Maddalam, Aranmula village manufacturing Aranmula Mirror, Cherpu village that produces Wooden handicrafts, Vellinezgi village that makes Kathakali Chamayam, Kerala Coir village and Kunjimangalam village that produces handicrafts in alloys are represented.
Hundreds of Indian and International craftsmen participate in the festival. Stalls from Afghanistan, South Africa, Uganda, Nepal and Srilanka are usually present. Indian participants include state and national level winners. Organisations in the handicrafts sector, especially from the public sector, also put up their stall.
In the evening dance and music programs are held. Kerala food festival, book fair and artisan honouring events are also part of the festival.
Sargalaya International Crafts Festival is an initiative of the Department of Tourism, Government of Kerala. It had been awarded as the best rural tourism project in India.
