Description:

Dr Salim Ali's bird survey of Travancore in 1933 in which he discovered 167 birds, led to a series of studies and observations at Thattekkad. The famous ornithologist reported that this evergreen low lying forest area at Thattekkad is extremely rich in bird diversity. On his recommendation, about 25 sq km of forest area was notified in the year 1983 for the Bird Sanctuary.

Thattekkad in Malayalam literally means flat forest. It is about 12 kilometres from Kothamangalam town. The bird sanctuary has the Periyar as its west and south-west border. The south and southeast part is the Malayattor Reserve forest, Northside is Idalamalayar, east and northeast side is Kuttampuzha village.

The Thattekkad bird sanctuary is now named after Dr Salim Ali himself and is the first bird sanctuary in Kerala.

The biodiversity at the Thattekkad is as follows

  • 320 species of birds
  • 730 species of plants
  • 224 species of butterflies
  • 54 species of fishes
  • 39 species of mammals
  • 37 species of reptiles
  • 18 species of amphibians
  • 19 species of dragonflies and damselflies

Thattekkad is probably the best place for bird watching in Kerala. The smallest bird found in Kerala, the Ithikkanni Kuruvi that weighs just 7 grams to birds that weigh more than 3 kilograms can be found here.
