Description:Thenmala ecotourism site is a naturally beautiful and scenic forest zone in the western ghats and is a part of the Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary. The area around the Parappar dam which is also called the Thenmala dam is the site of this ecotourism project. Flanked on both sides of the Thenmala dam reservoir is the Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary. It has the distinction of being the first organised environment-friendly ecotourism projects in India.
Thenmala ecotourism was inaugurated in 2001 and is maintained by Thenamala ecotourism promotion society. The ecological sensitivities and environmental suitability are given the highest priority in this ecotourism project.
Various facilities related to ecotourism are present at Thenmala. Broadly three are projects Thenmala.

Ecotourism
The highlight of the ecotourism at Thenmala is the trekking at Thenmala and neighbouring places. The various trekking options are
- Trekking to Palaruvi waterfalls at Rajakooppu hills which is 17 km away from Thenmala.
- Two Hour soft trekking to Thenmala forest zone.
- Trekking inside Shenduruney wildlife sanctuary that lasts 3 days. One can stay inside the forest and experience it in all its beauty and charm. 5 to 10 people can go as a group. A fee needs to be paid for food and accommodation.
Eco-friendly General Tourism
Eco-friendly general tourism has the following attractions. Eco-friendly general tourism is based at Thenmala.
1) Adventure Zone
Adventure zone has The Mountain Biking, Rock Climbing, Nature Trails, Walk through the forest footpaths, Treehouses, Mountain Biking, Resting Spots, Lotus Pond
Walk over the elevated walkways through the forest. Built at the height of tree branches, this is at a height of 33 feet with 110 steps and a length of 120 meters.
River crossing (crossing the river by hanging on to a rope).
2) Culture zone
It includes nature camps and related activities at the ecotourism facilitation centre. an amphitheatre to present folk art and other performances.
Shop court run by Women self-help societies.
3) Leisure zone
Leisure zone includes the following
- Forest garden with the theme 'Man and Nature'
- Sculpture garden
- A walkway along the river banks
- Suspension bridge
4) Boating
Boating is within a lake entirely surrounded by the Shenduruney Wildlife Sanctuary. Boating is available from morning to evening. One can enjoy the beauty of the forest on this boat ride.
5) Butterfly garden where one can watch rare butterflies at close quarters. Guided safari available.
6) Children's Park with fun rides and games for kids.

9) Nakshatra Vanam with trees corresponding to each asterisk as per the Malayalam calendar.
Attractions nearby Thenmala Ecotourism
'Ottakkal Outlook' called as the gate to Thenmala ecotourism is a breathtakingly beautiful place. There is also a lake near the place. A watchtower is present to enjoy the scenery. This place is about 16 km from Punalur on the National Highway 208.
Tickets / Registration:There are separate fees for enjoying the various attractions and experiences and for the accommodation.
