The Alpassi festival is marked by the circumambulation in the various Vahanas of the presiding deity Anantha Padmanabhan. This is followed by the Pallivetta on the penultimate day and Arattu on the final day on which the image of the deity is taken out of the temple as a procession.
The ceremonial procession or the Sheeveli is on different Vahanams on each day. The images of Sree Padmanabha Swamy, Sree Krishna Swamy and Sree Narayana Swamy is taken for procession and Arattu. Sree Padmanabha's Vahanam is in gold while the other two are in silver. The order is as follows.
Simhasana Vahanam, Anantha Vahanam, Kamala Vahanam, Pallakku Vahanam, Garuda Vahanam, Indra Vahanam, Pallakku Vahanam and Garuda Vahanam on the 8th to the 10th day. The deity's favourite Vahanam Pallakku is used twice and the most preferred Garuda Vahanam is used four times.
The Arattu procession on the tenth day has the head of the Travancore Royal family escorting the procession. The Arattu procession starts in the evening from the Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple through the western gate. Other members of the family along with men with drawn swords and shields accompany the procession.
The Arattu procession culminates at the Arattu Mandapam on the Shanmugham beach where the Arattu or the Holy bath is performed.
The Arattu ritual is also performed for the Painguni festival in addition to the Alpashi Festival.
