Schedule and Timing:
The ten day long festival begins with flag hoisting on the Vishu day in the month of Medam. The Ithithanam Gajamela is on the 9th day of the festival which is also the main festival day. Arattu on Pathamudayam or the tenth day from Vishu.
Description:The Main deity at the Ithithanam Devi temple is Bhadrakali. The belief is that the Kodungallur Devi's presence is there at Ithithanam. Thiruvutsavam is the main festival here.
All the processions from the participating localities reach the temple on the 9th day of the festival. The famous Ithithanam Gajamela is held on this day.
The winner of the Gajamela is given the title Gaja Ratna. Unlike most other Gajamelas, here the elephants are displayed without their traditional decorations.
Different temple art forms like Arjunanrutham, Velakali and Sreebhoothabali are performed during Thiru Utsavam Festival days.
