Schedule and Timing:

The Thiruvathira asterisk in the Malayalam month of Kumbham is celebrated as the festival day of the Devi. Kuthira Eduppu at 3 pm. Pongala on the Makayiram day or the day before the Thiruvathira day. The Kadakkal Thiruvathira festival lasts 10 days. 

Description:

A highlight of the festival is the Kuthira Veppu. Giant effigies of bulls and other folk arts, accompany the Eduppukuthirakal which are of 40 to 80 feet in height. These are carried on the shoulders and circumambulated by the devotees around the temple.

On the last day, at midnight, the festival ends with Mudiezhunnellippu followed by Guruthi. Guruthi is done symbolically instead of the animal sacrifices done during the earlier times. 

Kodiyettu is done a week prior to the Thiruvathira Mahotsavam. Cultural events on the evenings adds to the festivities on all days of the festival.

About Kadakkal Devi Temple

Kadakkal Devi Temple is a famous temple located in Alatharamoodu at Kadakkal Panchayat in Kollam District.

The deity is known as Kadakalamma in the temple of Kadakkal. The place name Kadakkal may be derived from the word Kadakkal meaning the Holy feet (of the Devi).

One of the features of this temple is that there is no idol consecrated in this temple. The pujas are performed by Nettur Kurupps and not brahmins.

The Legend of Kadakkalamma

Two women from Pandi region came to Anchal. Kadayattu Unnithan a prominent person at that place gave them tender coconut and a place to take rest and an empty house to sleep at night. 

The next day when she came to Unnithan, she saw only one woman. There was a divine experience there. That woman also disappeared from there. 

Legend has it that the woman, who vanished in front of Unnithan, is the Kadakkal Bhagavathy and the woman who disappeared at Kadayattu is the Kadayattu Bhagavathy. They are believed to be sisters.
