Schedule and Timing:

Thiruvananthapuram Zoo timings are from 9.00am to 5.15pm on all days except Mondays and National Holidays. Wednesdays from 1.00pm to 5.00pm.

The Art Galleries, Museums, Aquarium etc are open from 10.00am to 5.15pm on all days except Mondays.

Description:

Thiruvananthapuram Museums and Zoo spread ever an area of 22 hectares or 55 acres has one of the oldest zoological parks int he country. The zoo has more than a hundred different species of animals both from India and abroad. About 60 varieties of free-ranging birds including migratory birds are found throughout the year. Also present are about a hundred number of exotic plant varieties. The Zoo itself occupies an area of 30 acres.

The Zoo was started in 1859, though the museum was opened in 1857. However, the concept of zoo those days was limited to caged animals. These were later modernised the biggest stride in this direction done by the Govt. Of Kerala in 1995. The iron cages replaced by more spacious and natural settings.

Other attractions within the Museums and Zoo complex include,

  • Sree Chitra Art Gallery - Paintings by Raja Ravi Varma and various artists belonging to the different styles of painting like Mughal, Rajasthani, Thanjore etc.
  • Napier Museum - A bungalow turned museum has a large collection of artefacts with the 19th-century bungalow itself a major attraction. The collection includes sculptures and other works of art in wood, ivory, textiles etc.
  • Natural History Museum - A collection of zoological specimens that includes skeletons and stuffed animals and other exhibits.

Tickets / Registration:

Fee for Person above 12 years - Rs.30. Children from 5 to 12 years - Rs.10. Group Ticket 35 Students above 10th class and two teachers - Rs. 400. Group Ticket 35 Students below10th class and two teachers - Rs. 300. Some Museums and attractions have separate entry fees.
