Description:State Museum and Zoo or the Thrissur Zoo as it is popularly called started in 1885 and is one of the oldest Zoos in the country. It covers an area of 13.5 acres in the heart of Thrissur city, at a walk-able distance from the Thrissur Town hall and 1.5 km from Swaraj round. It is the home for a variety of animals, birds and reptiles. A botanical garden is present that has a variety of medicinal plants along with other trees.
The state museum present within the zoo premises gives a glimpse of the weaponry and the dressing styles of the Cochin Maharajas. The museum has a collection of wood carvings, scultures, Kathakali figures, animal skeletons, stuffed animals and other artefacts.
Resting areas are available for the elderly. A canteen is present within the premises. Visitors can buy booklets and DVD related to zoo from the information counter. Bio fertilisers made of bio waste from the zoo are available for sale at subsidised rates from the information counter.
Zoo relocation plans
Plans are underway to relocate the zoo to Puthur which is about 10 km from Thrissur to an area of 336 acres. This will be named as Thrissur Zoological Park Wildlife Conversation & Research Centre, Puthur. Jon Coe an Australian based internationally acclaimed Zoo designer is providing the design inputs for the new zoo to be built.
