Thrissur Pooram is the biggest regional festival in Kerala and is considered the Mother of all Poorams. Thrissur Pooram 2018 is from April 25th to April 26th. Thrissur Pooram falls on the Malayalam month of Medom, which is April - May. The beauty of Thrissur Pooram is that it transcends from a temple festival to a grand cultural extravaganza that cuts across regions and religions.
While there are many poorams and post-harvest festivals of grand nature, mostly spread across the eastern side of central Kerala, Thrissur Pooram excels in every respect, whether it be Chenda melam, Pancha vadyam, Ezhunnillippu (possession with the deities on caparisoned elephants), Kutamattam, (display of decorated umbrellas on two sides facing each other) or grand fireworks.
There are ten participants for the Thrissur pooram; however, four each, side with the main participants Paramekkavu and Thiruvambadi. Vadakkunnathan is the host for the Pooram
On the Paramekkavu side, Pookattikkara-Karamukku Baghavathy, Choorakattukara Baghavathy, Chempukkavu Baghavathy and Panemukkumpilly Sastha, while on the Thiruvambadi side, Ayyanthole Baghavathy, Nethilakkavu Baghavathy, Laloor bhagavathy and Kanimangalam Sastha.
Though the actual Pooram is a 36-hour high energy episode, the associated events and activities extend beyond this period. Chamaya Pradarsanam which is the exhibition of elephant decorations and the exhibition of special umbrellas for kutamattam, start a couple of days before the Pooram day. The Thrissur Pooram Exhibition 2018 will start on 1st April 2018 and extends to several weeks after the Pooram. A fireworks display usually called the 'sample fireworks' happens two days before the Pooram day.
